I think Holden is an unreliable narrator. Since he complains a lot and thinks almost every thing around him is phony, that makes me think maybe he talks things just according the way he wants. Sometimes it’s just a normal thing, but just because he isn’t satisfied with it, he will talk about it in the way he wants and let readers also think this thing is phony or lets readers follow his emotion.
Another things is Holden faced a lot more than this kind of age boy should be worry about. Like his brother Allie died and got kicked out of the school. In his writing he seems doesn’t care about everything but actually he influenced by everything. That makes me guess maybe sometimes he sees things in sad way and maybe the truth isn’t exactly he talked about. I think his emotion is influenced his writing story.
Sometimes he can’t control his feelings. I remembered there is almost one chapter just talking about his worry about Jane and Stradlater. He never said directly his feeling to Jane, but from his worry and some strange behavior we know there is more to the story. About the things he really cares, he sometimes chooses to avoid writing direct feeling and hide something. Another example is about his parents, just from the beginning he talked a little about them, over the story you can find he rarely talks about them. When you hide something or avoid talking about something that usually means there is more to the story.
He is just during a period that is changing from a boy to a man. He seems very mature but lots of time he is too emotional and that me thinks maybe sometimes he just talks about thing in the he wants to talk about. That makes me think Holden is a unreliable narratot.
