Introduction: I wrote this assighnment on 2012/12/14. The purpose of the writing assignment is let us know how to write a news story.
Reflection: This is my first news story. In this assignment, I talked about our school election. I recorded some special moment of the election and how the american style election worked in shanghai. I talked about the process from the beginning to the end. At first i didn't know how to write a news story, what is a good lead look like and how about the kicker. A good lead can attract readers eyes and a good kicker can let readers think lot. A good kicker should include what is the story want to tell readers and from this story what should we learn. And here is my first news story. Although it need many improve but I think it is good start for me.

FIRST STUDENT COUNCIL IN suis
On Oct. 21st Shanghai United International School had its first student council. Students had two speeches, and all the students spent nearly one month to prepare this election. The school wanted everyone of this school join in this process and learnt how the real election worked.
First, all the students were divided into two houses, blue house and red house. If someone wanted to be the president, the first step was to recommend themselves. Teachers tidied the list then arranged the data for the speeches. The speech was held in the hall; the candidates sat in the front and voters sat in the back. Candidates had their speech on why he or she is the best president and talked about the issues, including their plan to solve these problems. A lot of candidates talked about the lunch issues, homework issues and activity issues.
Garith, a red house student running for president candidate said “Students are very unhappy with the quality of the lunch food, I have talked to the manager of the canteen.” Candidates have to try their best to recommend themselves in 5 minutes. During this speech, voters would have the choice and each candidate had their supporters.

The second round challenge was the debate from the headmaster Mr. Richard. He asked some question on issues and the future of this school. Then candidates talked about their ideas concerning these questions. Sometimes some questions stumped candidates. During the time between the debate to the voting day, voters made big posters or many small leaflets to recommend the candidate they chose. Big posters were put on classroom’s windows since it could catch voters’ eyes. Small leaflets were post along the lobby to recognize voters who is the best president. One week later, the election came. Voters and candidates were gathered in art room and sat in their house. During the first round, all the presidential candidates stood in a different corner. Voters voted by standing behind the candidates. The first round was very easy; each house successfully got one final candidate. The race was not only between two single people, but also two big houses. Teachers asked two final candidates to make one short speech to have more voters. Blue house candidate Kathy talked about the issues on school activities. She suggested having more activities to enrich our school life. Red house candidate Linda also from grade 10 talked about the issues on lunch. Since the beginning of school, the American school students picked up lunch at the teachers’ window, but then the school let them pick up their lunch at another window. Garith from grade 10 said “The menu at teacher window was better, so we suggested to line-up at the teachers’ window.” The other thing that made students unhappy was students used to sit at small round tables but then the school let students sit at long rectangular tables. Students have to sit with each other in a crowed way.
After nearly one month election, the first student council finally done, and the winner was Kathy and she became the first president of the first year.
Kathy said “I am honored to be the president of the first student council, I will try my best to serve everyone and make the school become better.”
